Coating Machines

PLATIT are a leading developer and manufacturer of highly advanced coating machines that are based on plasma generating PVD technology (Physical Vapour Deposition).

PLATIT offers complete turn-key solutions including all necessary peripheral equipment and technologies for surface pre-treatment:

  • by polishing, brushing and/or microblasting
  • vacuum cleaning with a "start-and-forget" fully automatic operation
  • stripping of coatings from HSS and carbide

Platit coating machines work on the basis of the Conventional Cathodic ARC principle and the revolutionary LARC® (LAteral Rotating Cathodes) and CERC® (Central Rotating Cathodes) technologies. These technologies are patented and are unique.

From their Headquarters near Solothurn in Switzerland, Platit operates on a global basis and has supplied more than 425 coating installations world-wide into no less than 38 different countries.

One of the main applications for Platit coating machines is the coating (usually TiN, TiCN, CrTin, etc) of cutting tools (end mills, form tools, and drills) and also inserts, saw blades, hobs and broaches. Here Platit leads the way in offering cost effective solutions that means that tool manufacturers can now easily and cost efficiently coat their own tools and cutters instead of relying upon expensive subcontract solutions.

Platit has calculated that as soon as a company’s annual spend on coatings exceeds €150k/year (approx. £107k) then it makes the purchase of a machine viable and for the small to medium sized tool manufacturer the Platit Pi111 entry level machine is ideal

This compact machine uses the advanced LARC® (LAteral Rotating Cathodes) technology for coating HSS and Carbide cutters of all types with typical outputs being:

  • End mills, drills etc. (2μm coating): Ø 10x70 mm in length, 288 pcs: 4 hours
  • Cutting Tool Inserts (3μm coating): Ø 20 x 6 mm in length, 1,680 pcs: 4.5 hours
  • Hobs (4μm coating): Ø 80 x 180 mm in length, 20 pcs: 6 hours

Platit do much more than just building coating machines; they are constantly developing new coatings for their customers’ needs and offer a full consultancy service for their end users to ensure that they are using the optimum coating for their application. The machines themselves are very user friendly and are extremely versatile. Coating is no longer a black art!
